Florence

Her story is similar to many others we encounter in our daily activity in Cottolengo Mission Hospital.
She is a 40 year-old woman who got an exposed fracture of tibia and fibula after being attacked with a machete by her partner in August 2016.
She was taken to Meru Government Hospital where the fracture was reduced with an exofix, up to when the skin lesions would recover completely.
She had been in hospital ever since.
A new X-Ray indicated the need for an internal fixation, because there was fracture mal-union.
But the problem was economical: already it had been so difficult to raise the money necessary to buy the external fixator; now she could not afford anything anymore.
Actually her family situation was not good at all.
She is an orphan of both parents, firstborn of 4 children: therefore she has been taking care of the younger brothers since the parents died, mainly through agricultural work: she had in fact inherited a npiece of land from her dad, and she cultivates coffee.
She has a 3 year-old child from a relationship with a married man, the same who has been responsible of the violence which led to her bad fracture. After the attack she has not been with that man any more.
Unfortunately, all those misfortunes have led her into drunkenness and abuse of local alcoholic beverages, which have greatly contributed to further misery for her and her child, who is now living with one of her sisters.

Due to the family situation it would have been very difficult for Florence to raise the money necessary to set the hospital bill in Meru…but the strike came, the hospital was to be totally closed and she has therefore been waived and escorted to Cottolengo Mission Hospital.
Here Florence has been operated successfully with interlocking nail and she has been discharged able to again, although with crutches. Of course we could not expect any money from her.
It is through Sign Fracture Care International that we have been able to help Florence and to give her a new jumpstart, a fresh hope to rebuild her difficult life.
